Check out the trailer for the upcoming comedy Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, starring everyone's lovable awkward go-to nerd of the moment, Michael Cera, and tell me you're not a little intrigued. The film, debuting August 13th and featuring a bevy of crowd-pleasers - including Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, and SNL's Bill Hader - looks to turn the dried-up rom-com into a geeky and over the top farce of joyful proportions. It is directed by the same comedic genius who brought us the British comedies Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Edgar Wright, so it certainly could have potential. Hopefully the actual film delivers as much as the trailer suggests.

MOVIE: Easy A (trailer)
When I was in elementary school, my mother the high school English teacher, would have my brother and I help her grade her students' exams. (Don't panic, ex-students; it was just the multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, true/false, type answers.) By the time I had actually reached high school we were pretty well versed in the world of American and British literature. Or, at least the answers.
That being said, we also got to screen movie versions of these classic works as they came out. The trailer for Easy A excites me for a couple reasons. First, is that it has been awhile since anyone has remade Nathaniel Hawthorne's famous The Scarlet Letter into a film (the last major production was 1995's film staring Demi Moore and Gary Oldman). Secondly, I have never known of an updated, modern-day telling of the story.
Countless other classic novels have been redone to fit the present language and/or trends - Clueless (Emma), 10 Things I Hate About
You (Taming of the Shrew), and Bridget Jones's Diary (Pride & Prejudice) to name a few - so why not The Scarlet Letter? Emma Stone stars in Easy A as Olive Penderghast, a high schooler who sees her life as resembling Hawthorne's heroine, Hester Prynne. Stone has personality to boot, as evidenced by this trailer and her performance in the previously ZONINO!ed film Zombieland. The film also stars Stanley Tucci, Lisa Kudrow, Thomas Haden Church, Patricia Clarkson, and the hilarious Amanda Bynes.
The only thing that could make this movie have more promise is if "potential" were also spelled with an "A." Can't wait to check it out when it debuts in September of this year!

MOVIE: The Men Who Stare At Goats
There are always conspiracy theories about things the US government is supposedly doing. People of high office new about the 9/11 attacks before they happened; there really was an alien landing outside of Roswell, New Mexico; oil and gas firms, along with the US government, destroyed the idea of the electric car, the military has developed an earthquake-making weapon to use for far-away attacks. And I'm sure the list goes on!
The new trailer for the film The Men Who Stare At Goats tells the story of a US government and military training program focused on mind control. (I can almost hear the drool dripping from the conspiracy theorists mouths.) These "psychic spies" or "Jedi warriors" as the main mind-reader of the group, played by George Clooney, states several times, went through what appears to be a whole different kind of military boot-camp.
According to the trailer, the story is about a reporter, played by Ewan McGregor, who has heard these aforementioned tales of psychic soldiers and wants to investigate. He meets, Lyn Cassady, a member of this elite group of military personnel, and follows him around in hopes of getting to the bottom of the story.
The movie, also staring Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey, seems to recognize the absurdity in it's own concept and takes a humorous approach to the story. So, while this may or may not be based on a true story, it at least looks like a funny film with an ensemble cast worth catching. We'll see when it opens November 6th.

MOVIE: Precious (trailer)
My ignorance on this film is going to shine through like a beacon so here is what I know:
Someone named just Sapphire wrote a book in 1997 called Push. It is now a movie called Precious, about a pregnant teenage girl living a difficult life in some large city with her apparently single mother. It also appears that the film won a bunch of awards at the Sundance Film Festival this past winter, Mo'Nique is Oscar-bound, and Mariah Carey can indeed act.
It is positive, however, that the trailer will give you chills and might bring tears to your eyes. I can not wait to see this movie. Unfortunately, it looks like we'll have to wait until this fall. There will no doubt be an "I told you so" ZONINO! around that time.
