Through the use of nature show style documentary, the Heal the Bay organization has created an ingenius public service announcement urging Californians to become more conscious of their polluting habits, most specifically the use of plastic shopping bags. According to the PSA, Californians alone use 19 billion plastic bags a year, with mnay of them contributing to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a continent-sized area north of the Hawaiian islands filled with refuse. Hopefully the reaction to this mockumentary will be as effective as the spot is clever.

RAIN WEEK: Hard Rain Project
Part 4 of 5
Following the old children's rhyme, about April showers bringing May flowers, ZONINO! presents seven of our favorite "rain-themed" things.
The Hard Rain Project is a commendable organization, based out of London, with a goal to raise awareness about environmental issues, specifically climate change and its human relations, through images. Touring the globe with various exhibits aimed at making people stop and think about the interconnectivity of humanity and the planet, the charity raises money to continue the educational effort; an appropriately self-sustaining and non-hypocritical way to run such an organization if there ever was one!

The above picture, credited to UNEP and photographer Werachai Wansamngan, shows the juxtaposition of the human need for survival with the need to use and share one of the most precious and limited natural resources: water. In this image two Thai citizens search for pond snails to eat in the cracked and dried earth of what was presumably once a water-filled body of water.
Check out the book, containing powerful photographs centered around the lyrics of Bob Dylan's classic "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall." Also available is the similarly themed DVD film and a list of upcoming tour cities the exhibit and lecture series will visit such as Helsingør, Denmark (now - April 11), Minneapolis, MN (April 19 - 24), and Santa Fe, NM (May 1 - 28), among others worldwide.

WEBSITE: Charity Navigator
With the recent tragedy in Haiti and the plethora of relief organizations and charity drives popping up to "help" in the crisis, it's often difficult to know which are legitimate and which are less so. Personally, if I donate a certain amount of food or money to an organization to benefit a particular cause, I would like to think that close to 100% of my contribution is going to the people or situation that needs it. Unfortunately, misappropriation of fund and resources is often a problem in these situations.
The website Charity Navigator is here to help. Along with a rating system, Top 10 Lists, articles, and "hot topics," the site keeps readers up to date on developing crisis and causes around the globe. Bookmark this one for your research needs the next time you desire to give to those in need.
